Projects
While we see urban green spaces as the RIBS of a city, our research projects currently focus on three key themes related to our ultimate goal of Anchoring urban green space in city frameworks.
- Quantify the Business Case for multi-functional biodiverse green spaces
- Create stronger understandings around how to deliver an effective and equitable ‘portfolio of places’ for people and nature
- Identify the site and plot level management actions that are required to maintain high-quality, biodiversity rich and socially valued urban green spaces
Who do we work with?
To address these key themes, our projects involve collaboration across multiple disciplines, and involve research partners from academia, government, professional practices, industry and the broader community.
What skills to we bring?
Our team draw upon a diverse range of skills and expertise, but we are particularly known for urban biodiversity, spatial analysis, human health and wellbeing, landscape design and management, interdisciplinary collaborations and knowledge exchange and translation.
- Urban Biodiversity and Ecology
we have a strong working knowledge of many different taxa (plants, marsupials, mammals, invertebrates, microbes), and seek to gain further knowledge related to their distribution, interactions, adaptations and micro-evolutionary processes. while our emphasis is on terrestrial systems, we also actively look for opportunities to link to freshwater, marine, groundwater and atmospheric realms to identify more effective outcomes from an integrated approach.
- Spatial Analysis
we work with geographic information systems (GIS), simple and complex spatial datasets, remote sensing imagery, quantitative landscape metrics
- Planning, Design, Management and Governance
built environment professions have a direct influence on the spatial configuration for urban green space and the types of features found within them. Our team has expertise in urban planning, landscape architecture, vegetation and wildlife management. the governance arrangements, and the resulting decision making processes and outcomes have a major role in shaping urban green spaces. We are particularly interested in the relationships between different tiers of governance ranging from local actions to global frameworks.
- Human Health, Wellbeing, and Social Systems
people are a critical piece of the puzzle for urban greenspaces. We have experience with a range of methodologies and approaches used to understand this human dimension, including qualitative and quantitative data collection, analysis and interpretation
- Knowledge Exchange and Translation
we are passionate about bridging the gap between research and implementation, as demonstrated by previous work undertaken by Urban Ecology in Action
- Interdisciplinary and Multi-disciplinary Approaches
working with a diverse range of partners we have developed a strong set of skills that ensure we are able to make the most of our collaborations
